Dan is a PhD Candidate (V) in History. After a year spent researching his topic in Germany, he is now writing his dissertation under the working title “’Vergiss nicht unsere Kolonien!’ Mastering the Past of German Colonialism from 1919 to 1943”. Dan’s research examines the construction of German memory in relation to its former colonies by exploring the social, political and cultural
syncretisms that influenced Germany after the loss of its colonial territories. Looking at both Germany and its former colonies in Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, the dissertation reveals how colonial memory was established, challenged and instrumentalized in the Weimar Republic and Third Reich.
