Together with York’s Faculty of Education, CCGES is pleased to host a talk by Dr. Antje Barabasch (Education, Otto- von-Guericke University, Magdeburg) on Thursday, November 25th from noon to 1:30 pm in 749 York Research Tower building #95 on the map found here).

The work of the teacher has been affected by post-socialist transformations in the former German Democratic Republic  (GDR) that brought significant organizational and curricular changes to the educational system. The author investigated these changes in the general school system and examined how East German teachers of two generations cope with them and think about educational reform. The results are linked to current discussions regarding global developments in education.  The study will bring out the voices of teachers in the state of Thuringia and outline how they viewed school policy and practices comparing the East and West German school system. Some of the practices prevalent in East Germany that had been diminished after the unification are reconsidered in educational policy making today. Besides the reforms in the general educational system some innovative approaches in the field of VET that emerged in the East in the past 10 years will also be introduced.

Antje Barabasch is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Vocational Education and Human Resource Development at the University of Magdeburg. In her research she focuses on policy transfer in the field of VET, governance in VET, the school-to-work transition, academic cultures and the professional live of teachers. In the past four years she has been a visiting professor or visiting scholar at the Ohio State University, University of British Columbia, Stanford University, York University and the University of Toronto.
