Talk: From Gesture to Restitution – Austria Facing Its Past

Posted: October 28, 2007

As part of Holocaust Education Week events, CCGES is please to present this talk by Ms. Hannah Lessing, Secretary General of the General Settlement Fund and National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism.

During her talk, Ms. Lessing will consider Austria’s attempts to confront its past and face responsibility for acts of persecution perpetrated during the National Socialist regime by examining the question of whether compensation is an integral part of this process and, more specifically, what the meaning of “compensation” could possibly be in this context. Faced with the most hideous crimes ever committed against humankind, the question arises as to whether there can be any adequate compensation at all.

Hannah Lessing graduated in Economics from the Vienna University of Economics. After a career in International Banking, she was appointed as Secretary General of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria in 1995. In 2001, she was appointed Secretary General of the General Settlement Fund. With her team of 70 employees, she manages compensation payments to Austrian victims of the Holocaust.

This event is pleased to co-present this event with The Centre for Jewish Studies and Hillel of Greater Toronto.

Time: 12:30 to 2:00 pm
