Funding opportunities

Through the generous support of our partners and corporate donors, we are able to offer a number of grants and awards to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma. Scholarships and bursaries are also available to help students learn German; conduct preliminary research in Germany or German-speaking Europe; and participate in a conference, seminar or workshop.

AWARDS

BMW Canada Award for Excellence

Established by BMW Group Canada to recognize outstanding achievements for a York University student pursuing the Graduate Diploma in German and European Studies. Candidates must have completed at least one year towards the Graduate Diploma at the time of application and will be judged on their cumulative achievements, including: academic performance based on grades and faculty recommendations; record of research on Germany, Europe and/or relations between Canada and Germany or Canada and Europe; involvement in Centre activities; financial need.
Value: up to $2500.00

BMW Canada Award for Excellence – 2010 Application Information

International Doctoral Researcher Network: “Germany and the New Europe in the Age of Deborderings”

The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies at York University invites applications to conduct funded research in Germany as part of a DAAD-funded International Doctoral Researcher Network with its hub at the Technical University of Dresden. One doctoral student whose dissertation falls within the framing topic of “Germany and the New Europe in the Age of Deborderings” will be funded for a two-year period (2009-2010). Applications are due January 16, 2009 at CCGES (230 York Lanes).

International Doctoral Research Network application

Gerling-GCAN Insurance Company Award

The Gerling-GCAN Insurance Company Award will be offered annually to a Graduate Diploma student or an affiliated student. An affiliated student is a student with an interest in German and European Studies pursuing a Graduate program at York but not a Graduate Diploma at the Centre. To be affiliated with the Centre, the graduate student must submit to the Director a letter of interest and a curriculum vitae. The recipient of the award must present a minimum A average in their course work and demonstrate financial need. Further details are available from the Centre’s York University office.

William D. Graf Essay Prize

The William D. Graf Prize is awarded by the Centre each year for the best graduate essay in German and European Studies submitted by a student in the Graduate Diploma Program in German and European Studies at the Université de Montréal and York University. The Prize honours the memory of Professor Graf, a political scientist at the University of Guelph who was a member of the 1996 Bi-National Committee of Experts to select a Canadian Centre of Excellence in the field of German and European Studies. In addition to a monetary award ($250), students receiving the Prize will have their essay published in the Papers of The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies / Les Cahiers du Centre canadien d’études allemandes et européennes. SCHOLARSHIPS

Vernon Oliver Stong Scholarships in German & European Studies

Unfortunately the endowment from which the monies used to finance this scholarship has not generated any interest this year. As a result, CCGES regrets that it will be unable to award these in the 2009-10 academic year.

Hazel McCallion Scholarship

(with key support from Siemens Canada)

This fund was established to honour the Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion. A recipient of the Cross of the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, Mayor McCallion has unceasingly promoted the deepening and strengthening of commercial and cultural relations between Germany and Canada. A major contributor to the Hazel McCallion Scholarship Endowment Fund is Siemens Canada. The Scholarship will be awarded annually to one or more York University graduate students who are pursuing the Graduate Diploma in German and European Studies and who present a minimum average of “A” in their graduate course work. The numbers and amounts of the scholarships to be awarded each year will be decided by a committee of faculty members appointed to York University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and affiliated with The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies. BURSARIES

Greater Toronto Airport Authority Bursary

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority Bursary is awarded through The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies to a graduate student studying for the Graduate Diploma in German and European Studies in an area relevant to the environment. As per Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) criteria, recipients must have demonstrated financial need, must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or landed immigrant status, and an Ontario resident as defined by OSAP.
