20 Years Later: Markus Meckel & “German End Game”

On November 6th from 4 – 6 pm, the Goethe Institut Toronto (100 University Avenue, 2nd Floor, North Tower) will present  Mr. Markus Meckel, one of the central figures in the East German citizens’ movement and a German representative to the Two Plus Four Negotiations which laid out the ground rules for German unification. Meckel photoTrained as theologian, Mr. Meckel was one of the co-founders of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR and served as an elected representative of the SPD in both the East and West German parliaments from 1990-2009.  Here Mr. Meckel will recollect on his experiences during a period which would redefine the political map of not only Germany, but Europe and indeed the world in conversation with Prof. Marcus Funck, DAAD Visiting Professor in History at York and CCGES Faculty Affiliate. Following these discussions, there will be a screening of German End Game, a highly acclaimed docudrama reconstructing the story behind German unification (180 mins).

CCGES is pleased to be co-presenting this event with the Goethe Institut Toronto and the German Consulate General Toronto.
